Frequently ask questions

1. How do I know if the Recovery Disk will work with my Toshiba computer?

Toshiba Restore Disks are classified by model/part number. This information is found on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop. Here is a sample picture of a Toshiba sticker.

Toshiba Label

In this case, PTSE3U would be the number to search for to ensure you get the correct recovery disk. Also ensure that the Operating System listed matches what your laptop originally came with, by looking at the Certificate of Authenticity also located on the bottom of the laptop.</span> Be sure to enter this number in the notes section when you checkout so that we can ensure you get the correct recovery set.</p>

2. After restoring my HP/Compaq computer, I get a Code Purple Error. What do I do?

This is a common error, especially on computers that have had motherboards replaced, even under warranty. Sometimes the system ID is set wrong when the unit is new, which will cause this error as well. Simply download the Code Purple fix located Here, then boot back to disk one of your Recovery Set, press Alt + D to get to a command prompt, and run the file you just downloaded (you will need to copy it to a USB drive or a blank CD to run it). Then reboot your computer and the error should be gone and recovery will proceed as normal.

3. Error "This computer is NOT supported by this Recovery Disk"

There are several variations of this error message, including:
These System Recovery CDs do NOT support this HP pc model. Press any key to continue.

These PC Recovery discs do NOT support this PC model. Press any key to continue.

This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.

This is a very common issue on HP and Compaq computers. Again it is caused by a bad or missing DMI string n the BIOS, usually from a replacement motherboard. There are different methods to bypass this depending on the Operating System of the computer.

If the unit has Windows XP, you may download either of the following ISO images, burn them to a CD, then boot to them. HP Fix XP CD1 or HP Fix CD 2. To burn this ISO image to a CD you will need a blank CD and software to burn it with. We recommend ImgBurn, it is completely free to use. Get it Here. Once you have burned the CD, simply insert it into the drive on the computer you are trying to restore and follow the on screen instructions.

If the unit has Windows Vista, you can begin the recovery process by typing the following commands when you see the error message pop up. Do NOT click OK when you see the error message.Press Alt +D to open a command prompt window. Type the following lines and press Enter after each:

ren x:syslock lock
restore7

This will begin the recovery process and allow you to continue normally. If you have problems with this method, make sure the hard drive is completely blank and try again from the beginning. You may also download a Vista fix disk ISO from Here. To burn this ISO image to a CD you will need a blank CD and software to burn it with. We recommend ImgBurn, it is completely free to use. Get it Here. Once you have burned the CD, simply insert it into the drive on the computer you are trying to restore and follow the on screen instructions
